Cocktail view on Manithan (3.6/5)

An underdog lawyer takes on big shots in a public interest litigation case. Film picks up steam. Nice interval block.Neatly executed courtroom drama, that keeps you hooked with a terrific climax. Well done Ahmed & Udhaystalin.Udhaystalin best ever screen appearance, and is convincing as the dumb lawyer.

Manithan is the career best of Udhaystalin. Great improvement. By far the best Udhaystalin film. Fine job by Ahmed in adapting Jolly LLB. Gripping court room drama.Santhosh music in Hans Zimmer mode, superb songs too. Madhie impresses with each frame. Big pillars for Ahmed.Radha Ravi at his best and of course Prakash Raj in his flamboyant loud self.

Emotes great in the climax.Prakash Raj and Radha Ravi pack a solid punch.Touching angle on the homeless platform dwellers. Makes a big connect. Content wise a big win.Hansika is her usual beautiful self and shows marked improvement in lip sync too. Nice little role as the supportive lover.Vivek keeps the mood light with his trademark wisecracks. Nice to see him in good form. Lots of other cute little roles too.

The climax conversation between prakashraaj and Radha Ravi is proof for their expertise. Well done!Despite Prakash Raj's storming presence, Udhaystalin's subtile expressions stand out, perfectly suited for the underdog role. It's realistic and every character is believable. Has a nice motivating message, truth will triumph at the end.

Udhaystalin more than holds his own against stalwarts like Radha Ravi, Prakash raj.Hansika can be proud of herself, fabulous. aishu impresses. prakashraaj in a cliched role (scotch sipping corrupt lawyer).Downside too long at 2 hrs 30 minutes. 1st half need trimming especially scenes that show hero is a dumb lawyer. Great command over dialogs. Climax speech top. Must watch....

Manithan cocktail rating: (3.6/5).

TAMIL CINEMA DISTRIBUTION AREAS & METHODS

1. Chennai City
2. N.S.C - (North Arcot,South Arcot,Chengalpattu)
3. Kovai - (coimbatore)
4. Salem
5. M.R - (Madurai,Ramanadhapuram)
6. T.T - (Trichy,Thanjavur)
7. T.K - (Thirunelveli,Kanyakumari)
8. Other States - (Karnataka,Kerela,Andhra,Mumbai)
9. F.M.S - (foreign,malaysia,Singapore)
There are three popular approaches to transfer of distribution rights via distribution contracts:
Minimum Guarantee + Royalty - Here, the producer sells the distribution rights for a defined territory for a minimum lump sum irrespective of the box office performance of the film. Any surplus is shared between the producer and distributor, in a pre-set ratio (typically 1:2) after deducting entertainment tax, show rentals, commission, print costs and publicity costs. Effectively, the distributor becomes a "financier" in the eyes of the market. This is the most common channel available to high budget producers.

Commission - Here, the distributor pays the producer the entire box office collection after deducting commission. So, the entire risk of box office performance of the film remains with the producer. This is the most common channel available to low budget producers.

Outright Sale - Here, the producer sells all distribution and theatrical rights for a defined territory exclusively to a distributor. Effectively, the distributor becomes a "producer" in the eyes of the market. So, the entire risk of box office performance of the film remains with the distributor.
There are four popular approaches to transfer of exhibition rights via exhibition contracts:
Theater Hire - Here, the exhibitor pays the distributor the entire box office collection after deducting entertainment tax and show rentals. So, the entire risk of box office performance of the film remains with the distributor. This is the most common channel for low budget films, casting rank newcomers, with unproven track record.

Fixed Hire - Here, the exhibitor pays the distributor a maximum lump sum irrespective of the box office performance of the film. Rental is not chargeable per show. Any surplus after deducting entertainment tax is retained by the exhibitor. Effectively, the exhibitor becomes a "producer" in the eyes of the market. So, the entire risk of box office performance of the film remains with the exhibitor. This is the most common channel for high budget films, casting established front-runners, with proven track record.

Minimum Guarantee + Royalty - Here, the exhibitor pays the distributor a minimum lump sum irrespective of the box office performance of the film. Any surplus after deducting entertainment tax and show rental is shared in a pre-set ratio (typically 2:1) between the exhibitor and distributor. But risk of deficit remains with the exhibitor. This is the most common channel preferred by single screens.

Revenue Share - Here, the exhibitor shares with the distributor, in a pre-set ratio (typically 1:2), the entire box office collection of the film after deducting entertainment tax. Rental is not chargeable per show. So, the entire risk of box office performance of the film is shared between the exhibitor and distributor. This is the most common channel preferred by multiplex screens.

Camera shots, angles and movement, lighting, cinematography and mise en scene

Film Techniques
Film techniques is the term used to describe the ways that meaning is created in film.
Camera Shots
A camera shot is the amount of space that is seen in one shot or frame. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of a film's setting, characters and themes. As a result, camera shots are very important in shaping meaning in a film. Reviewing the examples on the right hand side of this page should make the different camera shots clearer.
An extreme long shot (animation on right) contains a large amount of landscape. It is often used at the beginning of a scene or a film to establish general location (setting). This is also known as an establishing shot.
A long shot (animation on right) contains landscape but gives the viewer a more specific idea of setting. A long shot may show the viewers the building where the action will take place.
A full shot (animation on right) contains a complete view of the characters. From this shot, viewers can take in the costumes of characters and may also help to demonstrate the relationships between characters. For more information on costumes and acting refer to Chapter 4.
A mid shot (animation on right) contains the characters or a character from the waist up. From this shot, viewers can see the characters' faces more clearly as well as their interaction with other characters. This is also known as a social shot
A close-up (animation on right) contains just one character's face. This enables viewers to understand the actor's emotions and also allows them to feel empathy for the character. This is also known as a personal shot.
An extreme close-up (animation on right) contains one part of a character's face or other object. This technique is quite common in horror films, particularly the example above. This type of shot creates an intense mood and provides interaction between the audience and the viewer.
When analysing a film you should always think about the different camera shots and why they are being used. The next time that you are at the cinema or watching television see what camera shots are being used.
Important: These camera shots are used in all forms of visual texts including postcards, posters and print advertisements.
Camera angles
It is important that you do not confuse camera angles and camera shots. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of setting, themes and characters. Camera angles are used to position the viewer so that they can understand the relationships between the characters. These are very important for shaping meaning in film as well as in other visual texts.
The following examples will help you to understand the differences between the different camera angles
A bird's eye angle (animation on right) is an angle that looks directly down upon a scene. This angle is often used as an establishing angle, along with an extreme long shot, to establish setting.
A high angle (animation on right) is a camera angle that looks down upon a subject. A character shot with a high angle will look vulnerable or small. These angles are often used to demonstrate to the audience a perspective of a particular character. The example above demonstrates to us the perspective or point of view of a vampire. As a viewer we can understand that the vampire feels powerful.
An eye-level angle (animation on right) puts the audience on an equal footing with the character/s. This is the most commonly used angle in most films as it allows the viewers to feel comfortable with the characters.
A low angle (animation on right) is a camera angle that looks up at a character. This is the opposite of a high angle and makes a character look more powerful. This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the character. This can help the responder feel empathy if they are viewing the frame from another character's point of view.
As with camera shots, you will be able to see many examples of camera angles in any film or visual text that you view. The next time that you watch television or see a film, take note of the camera angles and think of how they affect your perception (idea) of different characters.
Another camera angle that you might come across is a Dutch angle.
A Dutch angle (animation on right) is used to demonstrate the confusion of a character. The example above should disorientate you.
Camera movement
Composers of films also use camera movement to shape meaning. The following are some examples of common camera movements and how they can be used to shape meaning in films.
A crane shot (animation on right) is often used by composers of films to signify the end of a film or scene. The effect is achieved by the camera being put on a crane that can move upwards
A tracking shot and a dolly shot (animation on right) have the same effect. A tracking shot moves on tracks and a dolly shot is mounted on a trolley to achieve the effect in the example above. This camera movement is used in a number of ways but is most commonly used to explore a room such as a restaurant. By using a tracking shot or a dolly shot the composer of a film gives the viewer a detailed tour of a situation. It can also be used to follow a character.
Panning (animation on right) is used to give the viewer a panoramic view of a set or setting. This can be used to establish a scene
Others
An Evangelion shot (animation on right) is derived from the popular anime series 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. This camera movement begins as an extreme close-up and zooms out abruptly, creating a blurring effect to emphasise the speed and size of the object
Lighting
Lighting is a very important aspect for shaping meaning in films. What kind of atmosphere is created in a room lit by candles? Have you ever heard of mood lighting? A room that is brightly lit by neon lights might seem to be sterile or a shadowy room might be eerie or scary. The lighting technicians in a film crew have the task of creating lighting to suit the mood and atmosphere of each scene in a film.
Consider the animations Lighting example one, Lighting example two, Lighting example three and think about what type of atmosphere is created in each.
For each example, do you think the lighting suits the characters in the frames? For instance, in Example Three the two people are very happy and the scene is lit brightly. What would be the effect on the atmosphere if the lighting were dark and shadowy, similar to Example Two?
Remember that lighting is used in still image visual texts as well as in films.
Cinematography
Cinematography is the combination of the techniques described in this chapter. This includes camera shots, camera angles, camera movement and lighting. Use the term cinematography to group all of these together, for example, 'The cinematography in that film was exceptional.'
Mise en Scene
Mise en scene refers to all the objects and characters in a particular frame. More specifically, it refers to the composition of the frame. When you use the term mise en scene, you are discussing where the composer or director has placed all the elements of the scene within the frame.

Special effects and sound

Special Effects
'Special effects' are often referred to as 'FX'. Special effects are used when a sequence or scene in a film cannot be achieved through the usual techniques. Examples where special effects are used are when Superman flies or when an explosion is too big or expensive to be filmed in reality. Advances in computer technology have made special effects an integral (central) part of many modern films. Two of the more common types of special effects that are used today are outlined below.
Computer generated imagery (CGI) is three dimensional (3D) computer graphics that are used to produce special effects for all types of film. Some famous examples of where CGI has been used include Shrek, Ice Age and for Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. It is important to note that CGI is not only used to construct virtual characters but can also be used to alter colour and lighting. Where a director feels that there is not enough colour in a scene, CGI colour grading can be used to brighten it up.
Bluescreens in a lot of circumstances have been replaced by CGI. You will still see examples of special effects using bluescreens used every day. The bluescreen is an actual object. Actors are filmed acting in front of a bluescreen and then, during editing, the background is replaced. This is how the original Superman films created the effect of superman flying. Television weather presenters use a bluescreen.
The animated image Bluescreen in studio demonstrate the set-up, which is what you would see in the television studio, and the animated image Bluescreen final result final image which is what you see on television.
Sound, Soundtrack and Music
The sound, soundtrack and music in a film are very important to the impact of films and play a major role in shaping meaning in the text. Next time you view a film try to imagine a suspenseful scene without the music. Does it have the same effect? There are a number of factors to consider when analysing sound in a film.
Diegetic sound is sound that occurs in film that is natural. These sounds include doors opening and closing, footsteps, dialogue (the voices of the actors if they are talking on screen), any music that comes from radios in the film or played on musical instruments, thunderstorms, tyres screeching and explosions. Any sound that is caused by actions or actually happens in the course of the film is diegetic sound. Imagine that the film is real. If you could hear that sound in real life, it is diegetic.
Non-Diegetic sound is sound that is added to the film during editing. These sounds include music and songs that are added to the film, music that sets mood for films (such as screeching violins at suspenseful moments), narration (voiceovers) and sounds added as special effects, especially in slapstick (comedy using exaggerated physical violence) sequences. (the "boing!" sound as a character is hit over the head - The Three Stooges is a classic example of this kind of sound). Any sound that would not occur if the film were real is non diegetic sound. For example, when you are sad, violins do not suddenly start playing! Sound can also be enhanced through processes such as reverberation and flanging. The audio files Original sound, Original sound with reverberation and Original sound with flanging demonstrate these effects.
The difference between sound, soundtrack and music is as follows.
Sound is generally referred to as diegetic sounds.
Soundtracks are any songs used during the film.
Music is the incidental mood music known as the film score.
Think about the influence sound has on the impact and meaning of film.
Clip one and Clip two demonstrate the effect of sound on film. They are the same visually, but the non-diegetic sound of each is different.
How would you explain the effect of the sound in this example? The non-diegetic sound in each clip has shaped meaning for the viewer.

A final word on film techniques, costumes, props and editing

Costumes and props are very important to the composers of film texts. Good costuming not only looks good but enables viewers to make judgements about characters very quickly. This is important for a film-maker - think about a film adaptation of a novel. The novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, which is a few hundred pages long, was adapted into a film format of only 149 minutes. Costumes play a major role in making this possible because viewers of the film make assumptions about the virtue of characters according to their cultural assumptions.
For example: What do you assume about the personalities of the characters in Image one and Image two?
What assumptions have you made about these two characters based on their costume? Perhaps you believe the priest in Image one to be a good honest, person and the man in Image two to be dishonest and maybe a criminal.
Let's see how the use of props might change our attitudes towards the two characters in Image three and Image four.
Have your assumptions changed about the two characters? How so? Can you see the difference that costume and props can make? The assumptions that we make based on costumes and props and the like are called visual cues.
Costumes are often used in a far more subtle fashion. Often when we view films we make assumptions about characters without realising. Consider Image five and Image six.
Has the colour of the tie in each image changed your assumptions about the characters? Many people would see the man with the black tie as being more mysterious - perhaps because there are connotations  of a secret service agent. The man in the pink tie may be seen by people as happier than or less serious than the man in the black tie.
ACTIVITY
Be the costume designer
Design the costume for this character in the animation Be the costume designer.
First design the costume so that the viewers will see the character as a shady or untrustworthy character.
Second design the costume so that the viewers will see the character as trustworthy and honest.
Editing
The final process of film creation is editing. When shooting is finished there will be hours and hours of footage - most of which will never be seen or used. It is the editor's role to ensure continuity (that the film flows from one scene to another and that plot and character development makes sense throughout the film). The editorial team is also responsible for sound editing. The editor in charge of this needs to ensure that both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds are synchronised and help to shape meaning as much as possible.
There are many editing techniques and rules and we will cover the basics here.
A Cutaway
A cutaway in a film occurs when a scene that is shot continuously is interrupted by another piece of footage. For example, a character driving a car down the street may have been filmed all in one shot, but half-way down the street a piece of footage of the character spying on the driver has been edited in. (Refer to the animation on the right for an example)
A Dissolve
This occurs when one scene slowly fades into another. This is often done to show the link between two scenes or the passing of time. For example, footage of the school hallway 30 years ago might dissolve into footage of the same hall today. This would emphasise the fact that it is the same hallway while still focusing on the changes that have happened over 30 years. (Refer to the animation on the right for an example)
Wipes
There are a variety of wipes. Wipes are used as transitional techniques between scenes. The following are examples of wipes. Pay close attention to how these wipes link scenes and therefore help to shape meaning.
A clock wipe is used to connote time passing between two scenes. (Refer to the animation on the right for an example)
A star wipe is used to connote an added value or something special occurring. (Refer to the animation on the right for an example)
A heart wipe is used to connote a feeling of love or romance (Refer to the animation on the right for an example)
A Matrix wipe can consist of a variety of patterns that form the transition between scenes. It will be up to you to decide why a composer has used a particular matrix wipe. (Refer to the animation on the right for an example)

Introdution to film making

Film is a complex text form. The reason for its complexity is that film includes aspects of spoken and visual text forms and can even sometimes include written text forms. It is important to learn each aspect of film so that we can get the most out of viewing films. Before you view a film, think about the effort that goes into making a film. Even a short film can take months to make. The following is a shortened version of the process.

An idea needs to be pitched (proposed/sold) to the producers. (Films are very expensive to make - they can cost millions of dollars - and the producers will fund the production.)
If the producers accept the pitch then a script writer/s will need to write the script - this could be hundreds of pages long.
Once the script is finished, the producers will need to employ a director and a cinematographer who will decide how the script will be presented.
This will involve a storyboard (much like a comic script) detailing every change of camera angle and shot and movement of actors. (Think about how long this would take! Next time you watch a film, try counting how many times the camera moves.)
Filming locations will then have to be found. This could involve extensive travel and lots of paper-work in an attempt to find the right place and to obtain the rights to film in particular places.
A casting crew will need to be hired to find suitable actors for all the parts. Remember, in a film there are many more actors than just the main ones to find. This casting crew will have strict guidelines from the director about what type of actors to hire.
Sound technicians, lighting experts, catering crews, transportation experts, costume designers and make-up artists will all need to be hired.
Each scene then needs to be filmed. Whether a shoot goes ahead or not will be dependent on the weather. The director will need to make sure that he informs the actors exactly how to act and where to stand, the sound technicians will need to organise sound equipment, cameramen need to be in position, lighting needs to be set up, make-up on all the actors and costumes prepared in advance. All this needs to happen at the same time for a scene, possibly as short as 30 seconds.
Even after the labour-intensive task of shooting the film, the work is not yet finished. The editor needs to go through hours and hours of film and decide, with the director, the best shots and how to put all the scenes together.
A sound technician and musician (possibly with the help of orchestras or bands) need to organise both the diegetic sound (sound that happens on screen) and non-diegetic sound (sound that happens off screen) in coordination with the editor and director to make sure it matches the film.
All this with very little mention of the money involved. Film-making certainly is a huge effort in co-ordination and it is the director's responsibility to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Types of film
There are numerous types of films. A narrative feature is the feature film that you may often view in a cinema or on DVD at home. The narrative implies a story with a similar structure to a written narrative. Other films that you might be asked to analyse include documentaries, short films, advertisements and even film clips. Many directors begin their careers with short films, advertisements and film clips.

Genre
You should also be aware of genre in films. Most of the films that you view belong to a genre (or type of film). There are many different types of genres and many different aspects to genres. We will focus on the differences in narrative (plot) and some of the features according to characters and setting of just some genres.

" Kalam will be a logical horror film " - Lakshmi Priyaa

Actress Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli says nearly eighty percent of the forthcoming Tamil horror-drama Kalam, which releases in cinemas on Friday, unfolds inside a house which plays a pivotal part in the film.

It is one of the most beautiful houses I’ve come across in the city. It’s a very ancient house and each room has about 10 doors. There’s no story without the house” said Lakshmi.

Directed by Robert Raaj, the film also stars Srinivas, Amzath and Madhu Sudhan. Kalam will be a logical horror film, says Lakshmi. “Unlike the recent horror comedies, our film is not intended to be funny. It has the usual share of thrills but everything you see will be logical and sensible” she said.

Although the experience working with a new team was encouraging,  Lakshmi found night shoots exhausting. “We were working on a tight budget, and hence, were working on double call sheets. Most of the night shoots would continue to the next day and we’d hardly have any time to sleep. It was really exhausting but the stress never came in the way of our work, thanks to the very committed team” she said.

Lakshmi currently has independent projects Revelations and Iglu, besides a few Tamil and Malayalam projects in her kitty.

Vishal and Tamanna for the first time .

As reported earlier, Vishal would be working with director Suraj for 'Kaththi Sandai' , a movie to be produced by the makers of Romeo Juliet. Hansika was touted to pair up with Vishal in this film but it has now been announced that Tamanna would be sharing the screen space with the tall hero, for the first time.

Vadivelu, Soori, Sampath and Jagapathi Babu have also been cast in this commercial masala entertainer which will get into shoots from May 2 in Chennai.

Theri creates history at Mayajaal

Vijay's big summer hit Theri is entering the 3rd week of its grand run today and posters are all over Chennai city, announcing the same. The film remains the first choice of movie goers despite other new releases coming out. In its 3rd week, Theri would continue in many big screens across the city despite the release of Manithan tomorrow.

In a massive milestone, Theri has crossed 1 lakh footfalls in the landmark Mayajaal multiplex in the outskirts of Chennai. This amounts to a gross of 1.2 crores from this center alone (120 rs per ticket). Mayajaal belongs to the Chengalpet territory and it's one of the few centers in this territory where Theri has been released. What a success story !!!

Extra hero intro special for Suriya in '24'

The team of '24' met the press in Chennai, earlier today to launch the 'Aathreya Run' mobile game. At the event, the teaser, trailer and song clips were also screened. Suriya, Vikram Kumar, Saranya Ponvannan, Mohan Raman and Madhan Karky were among those in attendance along with producer Rajsekar Pandian and distributor Gnanavelraja. The highlights of the event are as follows,

- Lyricist Madhan Karky said that there would be an extra hero intro song in the film, which hasn't been released in the album. This song would be launched soon.
- '24' is set to be censored today, after being delayed over the past few days.
- Gnanavel said that the film would release in more than 2150 screens worldwide, in both the Tamil and Telugu versions.
- Suriya expressed hope that '24' would join his list of special films like Nandha, Kaakha Kaakha, Pithamagan, Ghajini and the Singam series. He also thanked his fans in Kerala for their excitement towards the release of the film on May 6.

"On the whole, Iraivi is a performance-oriented movie" - Karthik Subbaraj

Techie-turned director Karthik Subbaraj’s passion for cinema is obvious, and so is his camaraderie with like-minded friends, Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, Karunakaran and Nalan Kumaraswamy. “It is because we all met at a time when we did not know what the industry had in store for us. Bobby, Kaunakaran and Vijay Sethupathi did not know if they would make it big in cinema. Nalan and I were wondering if we could pull it off on the big screen. Though we are on track, we still need each other when it comes to the movies.”

Rightly so, since their chemistry has given Tamil cinema quite a few engrossing flicks like Soodhu Kavvum and Jigarthanda. Tell him that yesteryear directors are in awe of the ‘newgen’ directors when it comes to story-telling or presenting it on the big screen and he says, “They were the ones who inspired us to take up cinema — Balachander sir, Balu Mahendra, Mahendran and Mani Ratnam. Their movies did not just influence, but left an everlasting impact deep in our hearts and that triggered our hunger for cinema,” says Karthik.

However, the new breed of directors also endured a lot of criticism from their counterparts for their style of movie-making. “There are two ways you can make a movie. One is, letting the audience watch whatever you feel like. Another category is giving the audience whatever movie you want to, but that will not help cinema as an art,” says Karthik, firmly.

So would his upcoming movie, Iraivi, satisfy the audience’s expectations? “When I started with Iraivi, I ensured that I did not bring to this script the success of Pizza and Jigarthanda. Moreover, I have not restricted this movie to any particular genre. You cannot term Iraivi a horror or thriller or a dark comedy. On the whole, it’s a performance-oriented movie,” he replies.

Karthik is in praise of SJ Suryah who plays a prominent role in the movie. “On the sets, there wasn’t a single moment when he behaved like a director of blockbusters. He was as enthusiastic as an aspiring actor and did not intervene in direction,” he recalls.

With his next movie with Dhanush being the talk of the town, he says that he is likely to retain his team for the movie. “We met one day and agreed to do a movie together. I am currently working on the script and the shoot will go on the floors in September.  I will divulge more details once I complete the script and other pre-production work,” he says.

Mahesh Babu to come soon after Suriya

Earlier in the morning, there was a big frenzy in social media thanks to a new motion poster from Mahesh Babu's Brahmotsavam. This poster announced that the audio will be launched on May 7 while the film has been confirmed to release on May 20 worldwide (2 weeks after Suriya's 24). There is no clarity on the Tamil dubbed version yet.

Mahesh is joined by leading heroines like Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal and Praneetha in Brahmotsavam, which is a clean family entertainer directed by Sreekanth Addala. Mickey J Meyyer has scored music for the songs and Rathnavelu has handled the camera. PVP Cinema has produced this film on a grand scale.

AR Murugadoss’s next to release in September

Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha recently unveiled the release date of her upcoming collaboration with A.R. Murugadoss, ‘Akira.’ The film is an official remake of the tamil movie, Mounaguru.
The 28-year-old actress took to her Twitter handle and wrote, “Guys super thrilled to announce @ARMurugadoss is back after Ghajini and Holiday. My action thriller #Akira releasing on 23rd Sept.
This is the second time she is working with director AR Murugadoss after Holiday. Akira happens to be the third hindi film for AR Murugadoss after Ghajini and Holiday.

Kamal Haasan’s next to have Brahmanandam

Vishal breaks his silence over Ajith and STR

The Nadigar Sangam held a press conference yesterday where officer-bearers opened up on recent issues. Vishal, the secretary of the association, clarified about he being upset with Ajith for skipping the celebrity cricket tournament organised by the Sangam and Simbu’s decision to withdraw from the actors’ guild.
He said thay he respects Ajith’s decision to not come for the match. He has known him since long. There are no issues between them. Was totally dejected seeing the news about me stopping Ajith’s song. Hope journalism is done in a sensible manner.
Vishal Krishna also told the reporters people ask him to address Ajith as “sir,” but he does not need such formalities with him as they have known each other for a long time.
At the press meet, Sangam Vice-President Ponvannan said Ajith had been following a policy of not attending such events for a long time, and the Nadigar Sangam was aware of it. He added that the guild’s members share good a relationship with the actor.
The controversy broke a day after the Nadigar Sangam’s celebrity cricket tournament was held in Chennai. A leading daily had reported that a party in a upscale hotel was organised after the completion of the tournament. The celebrities were in high spirits and enjoying the songs played by a DJ. Everything appeared fine until Vishal with Soundaraja of “Sundarapandian” fame went up to the DJ to stop the song “Adharu Adharu” from “Yennai Arindhaal” from being played.
Ajith’s absence at the celebrity cricket tournament, which was organised to raise funds to build the Nadigar Sangam’s new building, caused this reaction from Vishal Krishna, the daily had reported.
Reacting to Silambarasan’s decision to quit the actors’ guild, Vishal said he respected Simbu’s decision but clarified that all actors are equal in the eyes of the Nadigar Sangam.
Simbu announced last week that he was quitting the Nadigar Sangam and alleged that the actors’ guild did not support him during his time of crisis.

"Due to business impact, I had to reinvent myself." - Udhayanidhi Stalin

Udhayanidhi Stalin is back on screens this week with Manithan, directed by Ahmed and co-starring Hansika, Prakash Raj and Radha Ravi. The film is the official remake of Jolly LLB and is said to be an emotional court room drama. In a recent interview, Udhay said that he was consciously looking to avoid comedy and templated foreign songs, after three similar outings early on in his career,

"Due to business impact and the audience's changing tastes and expectations, I had to reinvent myself. They are expecting fresh content and it took some time for me to understand that. I was getting bored with the same comedy pattern. But in Manithan too, some comedy has been woven enjoyably into the film and it won't be all serious."

Another standout factor in Manithan is the presence of composer Santhosh Narayanan instead of Harris Jayaraj. On this, Udhay said,

"I needed a change-over from Harris after 4 good outings. 'Aval' was the first song which Santhosh gave and it just got better and better from there. His RR would elevate the film. He is my first critic and during the RR work, he called me to appreciate saying that I had acted for the first time (laughs)."

Manithan would be releasing in about 300 screens in TN this Friday.

"I have been receiving calls from my previous directors like Thirukumaran sir and they are all happy for the recognition that I am getting. I am keen to look out for similar roles which create good impact. I see Samithirakani sir as an inspiration and wish to do the kind of varied roles that he is doing."

Rajesh acted as one of the friends who are behind Sivakarthikeyan in Maan Karate. He also enacted the role of Vemal's brother in Maapla Singam and Vetrivel is his third outing. Rajesh is a big Thala Ajith fan and somehow wishes to land himself a part in Ajith - Siva's 'Thala 57' which would get into shoots soon. We wish him the best in his journey.

"Stardom stifled me" - Arvind Swami

Actor Arvind Swami, popular for films like Roja and Bombay , says he was a private person and hence stardom stifled him.

Arvind, who made his Bollywood debut with Mani Ratnam’s 1992 film Roja , is returning to the Hindi film world with debutante director Tanuj Bhramar’s upcoming film Dear Dad, a coming of age story, involving 14 year old Shivam and his 45 year old father Nitin Swaminathan. Arvind said: “I had started when I was 20 years old. I didn’t know how stardom would be like. Stardom and adulation that came in, kind of stifled me. I was a private person so, this stardom kind of stifled me and I wanted to get out of that for some time. I wanted to step out of that and do all the things that I wanted to do.

Arvind, who has ruled the southern film industry for a long time, says he didn’t want to be a star. He said: “I just wanted to be an actor so, I moved away only because of that. Now, I can look back and analyse it. And today I feel I can deal with it much better. Those days, I was too young I could not deal with it properly.” Arvind, father of two children, says parenting is the most difficult job. “I have been parenting them for the last 10 years. The most difficult job is parenting because there is no perfect way to follow it. You have to deal with different situations and challenges.” the 45 year old said.

Gangsters still have a major hold over Kollywood

Gangsters’ lives offer audience a vicarious satisfaction. They live on the edge, elude the law, commit excesses and Kollywood loves the don or so it seems from this slew of forthcoming releases: Kabali and Vikram Veda to name a few.

There is no dearth of stories about the underworld mafia and gangsters when it comes to cities like Chennai and Madurai. Kollywood filmmakers have taken a step further, presenting on celluloid the way they lived and died.

Till Kamal Haasan’s Nayakan hit the screens in 1987, a majority of people across Tamil Nadu and Mumbai did not really know what the Bombay underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar really looked like. Then came an array of movies, like Thalapathy, Baasha, Arindhum Ariyaamalum, Pudhupettai, Billa and Jigarthanda which raked it in at the box-office. Baasha ran to packed houses for 15 months.

The year 2016 will witness many more such movies, such as Kabali, in which Superstar Rajinikanth will be playing the role of Kabaleeswaran, a local don who went on to help Tamil refugees in Malaysia and Singapore. A source from the film unit says, “Kabaleeswaran was not just a mafia don. He has a huge fan following among Tamil people living in Southeast Asia for the kind of amiable person he was.” With Vishnuvardhan’s Billa in 2007 setting the trend for the new-gen international gangster, Vetrimaaran’s Polladhavan portrayed the life of a present generation gangster in north Chennai. “In my movies, I always try to bring the truth to light. And when it comes to Polladhavan , be it Dhanush or Daniel Balaji’s gangster Ravi’s character, I did a detailed research on the lives of these particular characters before bringing them to the screen.”

Director Ravi Arasu of Eetti fame says that he had to live in north Chennai to study the life of gangsters before writing the screenplay. “Audiences are always curious to know such things. And the onus is upon us to present the content to them with authenticity. Things are really different in north Chennai. I ensured that the lives of those gangsters or the way they talked wasn’t misinterpreted on screen. I lived there for 15 days and also took the help of my friend Andrews who was raised there,” he added.

Traditionally, almost all gangster movies have gone on to become a huge success on screen. There is something about a gangster’s life that intrigues us. Audiences always want to see how they came into that profession or how they emerged as gangsters, and finally, how they got caught or how they perished.
